Thickness is a structural decision, not a style preference. A frameless panel carries its own weight with no framing supporting it, so it usually needs 3/8″ or 1/2″. Semi-frameless can run thinner, often 1/4″ or 3/8″, because the perimeter framing takes the edge load. Why the Measurement Decides Everything
Tempering puts glass under internal stress. That’s what makes it strong, and what makes it break into small blunt fragments instead of sharp shards. It also means every cut, notch and hinge hole has to be made before the panel is tempered. Drill a tempered panel afterward and the whole piece shatters.
So the panel either matches your opening or it gets refabricated. There’s no trimming on site. That’s why we template after the tile and grout are finished and cured, measuring the walls as they actually run, noting where they drift out of plumb, and cutting to those conditions rather than to a nominal size.
The blocking decision happens months earlier
Heavy frameless panels transfer their weight into the wall through a small number of hinges, so the hardware has to anchor into studs or solid blocking, not drywall anchors. If your bathroom is still open to the framing, adding blocking behind the future tile is inexpensive and permanently solves it. If the walls are closed and tiled, we locate the existing structure during the measurement and lay the hardware out around what’s actually there.
